First off, decide in advance which microphone you’d prefer to use. Are you intending to stand behind a lectern for your entire speech? If so, then request a lectern microphone. Conversely, if you’re a more dynamic speaker, moving around the stage (and possibly walking into the audience) ask for a lavaliere clip-on microphone.
