AVG free download was a positive surprise

I recently decided to buy a computer, not wanting to spend too much money, I contacted a computer enthusiast and bought his old PC for peanuts. I was not sure I could install a new operating system on my own, so I left it untouched and used his programs. That turned out to be a mistake, as he had a lot of wierd programs on there, it seemed my computer and my internet connection were used by different programs without me knowing it. I really wanted to dissociate myself from anything that could be illegal. With avg download my computer was clean with half an hour, and I didn’t have to format my hard disk.
