The deposition of uric acid as crystals in joints is the main cause of gout. The crystals cause an inflammatory reaction that creates the intense pain that those with gout experience. The uric acid gets crystallized into joint when there will be high levels of uric acid in the blood. The main reason for having high levels of uric acid in the blood are possibly because the kidneys not excreting enough and can be due to taking too much purines from the diet, these uric acid is produced from purines. Gout mainly affects the big toe joint of the foot and is easily diagnosed as the joint is usually hot, swollen and red. Once the initial attack is over, then the cause needs to be found.
