What Are Stretch Marks?

January 6th, 2010 by admin

Stretch marks are a type of skin scarring caused by pregnancy, puberty, obesity, and short-term weight loss or weight gain.  Scars form when the middle layer of skin, known as the dermis, is stretched so much that it breaks down, leaving behind scars that can appear as shiny white or silver colored streaks or reddish-purple bruises under the skin.Stretch mark removal creams are available and can help lessen the appearance of scarring, but will not remove stretch marks on their own.  Cosmetic surgery and laser treatments are most effective at complete removal of stretch marks and skin scarring.
