Aquarium Accessories: Filters

July 22nd, 2010 by admin

Filters are one type of aquarium accessories that all fish tanks should have. Filters are designed according to the type of filtration that they should do. The three main types of filters are mechanical, biological and chemical filters. Mechanical filters work to remove debris by filtering the water through a mesh or a sieve. Chemical filters remove chemicals with the aid of charcoal or resins, while biological filters do their job by using colonies of good bacteria. There are filter systems that have all these three types in one unit. Maintenance is also a must with filters. Change the filter substrate if your tank water starts to get cloudy or you start to see foam formation. Some types of filters only need to be rinsed out and they can be reused as well. Aquarium accessories like filters come with standard tank kits, but you can also buy more powerful filters from your local pet stores. Larger tanks will need multiple filters in order to adequately clean the water up.
