Looking at my options for web advertising

The idea of using pay per click as a medium for driving traffic to my site is not one that I have used before but I am looking in to it more at the moment to see if it would be a worthwhile avenue to pursue. I was checking out how it works and from what I gather it looks like when someone sees your ad on a site and clicks on it then that is when you pay. So the host site or page displays your ad and then you pay them each time someone clicks on your ad on their page. I am still going through it all and deciding if this is the best option for my business website visibility.
