Define Physician Assistant

I am really confused about what to call the profession that I would like to get into. I have always wanted to get into the medical profession but of course at a different level then a physician. I am not sure that I want to be someone in the office that just pushed papers around, I really want to be hands on and a person that the physician can really depend on during treatments. What is the title of the job I am seeking? Do I go to a physician assistant college or do I look for a nurse practitioner classes?
