Your Pig Needs Quality Feed to Produce Quality Pork

May 6th, 2009 by admin

One of the most important considerations in raising pigs is their feed.  Like the old saying goes, “You are what you eat.”  Since you plan on eating the pigs, what they eat is important to you.  Their growth and the quality of meat they will produce all depends on the feed you give them.  Most people believe that you can feed pigs garbage; hence the term “slop the hogs.”  Table scraps are all right, but feeding them garbage or swill can cause health problems.  It is best to feed them a good quality swine feed, preferably one with a 14-15% protein content.  Sows who are pregnant or nursing and weanling piglets need more nutrition, so their feed should contain a higher percentage of protein.  Generally adult sows and boars eat four to five pounds of feed a day.  Take the cost and amount of feed needed into consideration when deciding how many pigs you want to raise at a time.
